How to read comics you own on a Kindle

Read the comics you own on a Kindle: left-to-right page order, CBZ, CBR and PDF files, color on the Colorsoft, and bundles and Kickstarter rewards.

To read a comic you own on a Kindle, convert it to an EPUB with pages sized for your Kindle and set to turn left to right, then send it with Amazon's Send to Kindle. Kindles don't open CBZ or CBR files. Tools made for manga can turn pages right to left, so check the reading direction before you convert a Western comic.

We make MangaSendr, one of the tools in this guide, so keep that in mind. The free route with KCC works for comics too.

Left-to-right reading

Western comics read left to right and manga reads right to left. The direction is stored inside the EPUB, so it has to be set before the file reaches your Kindle.

In MangaSendr you set it for each upload. When you drop a comic in the web app, choose Left to right (comics) under Reading direction. Right to left stays the default, so a library with both manga and comics works fine as long as you pick the direction for each comic.

Two-page spreads follow the same setting. MangaSendr turns any page that is wider than it is tall by 90 degrees so the whole spread fills the screen when you hold the Kindle sideways, and the way it turns follows the reading direction.

The free converter always builds right to left, so use the web app for comics. In KCC, leave manga mode off for a left-to-right comic.

CBZ, CBR and PDF comics

  • CBZ. A ZIP archive of page images. MangaSendr and KCC both read it as it is, and a plain ZIP of pages works too.
  • CBR. Usually a RAR archive. MangaSendr only reads CBR files that are ZIP archives inside. For a RAR-based CBR, extract the images with a tool like 7-Zip or The Unarchiver, zip them again and rename the file to .cbz. CBZ and CBR to Kindle shows each step.
  • PDF. Works in the web app. MangaSendr renders each page as an image at high resolution before sizing it for your Kindle, so lettering stays crisp. The free converter doesn't take PDFs. PDF comics on a Kindle has more.
  • EPUB. Comic EPUBs made of page images work. Text EPUBs don't. MangaSendr takes the page images in file-name order, which matches the reading order in most comic EPUBs but not all, so check the first few pages of the first one you send.
  • Images. A single JPG, PNG or WebP becomes a one-page book, so zip a folder of pages first and drop the ZIP.

The web app takes files up to 500 MB each, and you can pick several at once. They go out one at a time, in order.

Color on the Colorsoft

On a Kindle Colorsoft or Scribe Colorsoft, MangaSendr keeps every page in color and sizes it for the screen: 1272 x 1696 on the 7-inch Colorsoft and 1986 x 2648 on the 11-inch Scribe Colorsoft. Other Kindles get greyscale pages with a contrast boost.

Amazon lists both color screens at 300 ppi for black and white and 150 ppi for color, so color art shows at half the pixel density of black lines. Manga and color comics on the Kindle Colorsoft has the details.

Humble comics bundles and Kickstarter rewards

  • Humble Bundle and Fanatical run Western comics bundles from publishers such as Image, IDW and Valiant, as well as manga bundles. The files are DRM-free, in PDF, EPUB and sometimes CBZ. When a bundle offers CBZ, pick it: it's the page images in order. The Humble and Fanatical bundle guide covers downloading and sending a whole bundle.
  • Kickstarter and other crowdfunding rewards. Digital rewards from comic campaigns often come as PDF or CBZ downloads. They're your files, so they convert like any other.
  • DRM-free stores and free comics. Panel Syndicate sells DRM-free comics at a price you choose. Pepper&Carrot by David Revoy is a full-color webcomic under a Creative Commons license, free to download.

Step by step with MangaSendr

  1. Make a free account and add your Kindle with its model. If you have a Colorsoft or Scribe Colorsoft, pick it, so pages keep their color.
  2. Add MangaSendr's sending address, delivery@mangasendr.com, to your approved list in your Amazon settings. A free 5-page test file lands on your Kindle so you can see it worked.
  3. Drop the comic, choose Left to right (comics) under Reading direction, and send it.

Most files arrive within a few minutes. Big ones arrive in parts small enough for Amazon's email, each with its own cover and named (1 of 3) and so on. Your first delivery is free. How MangaSendr works has the details, and how to read manga on a Kindle covers the free route with KCC.

Questions

Can a Kindle open CBR files?

No. Kindles don't open CBR or CBZ files, and Send to Kindle doesn't accept them. Convert them to EPUB first. MangaSendr reads CBR files that are ZIP archives inside. Re-zip a RAR-based CBR before you upload it.

Will my comics keep their color?

On a Kindle Colorsoft or Scribe Colorsoft, yes. Other Kindles show greyscale.

Why do my comic's pages turn the wrong way?

It was converted for right-to-left reading, the manga default. Convert it again with left to right selected: Left to right (comics) in MangaSendr, or manga mode off in KCC.

Which Kindle is best for comics?

For color comics, a Colorsoft or Scribe Colorsoft. For big pages, a Scribe: its 10.2 or 11-inch screen is closer to the size of a printed comic page. Manga on every Kindle model lists every page size, and the best e-reader for manga in 2026 compares the options.
