How to read vertical webtoons on Kindle and e-readers

Korean manhwa and webtoons (Solo Leveling, Tower of God, Lore Olympus) are drawn as one long vertical strip that you scroll through, unlike Japanese manga, which is drawn in pages.

That works well on a phone. On an e-reader it needs some preparation, because a Kindle or Kobo shows one fixed-size page at a time.

Why long strips break on e-readers

A raw webtoon chapter is often a single image around 800 pixels wide and 20,000 pixels tall, or a handful of very tall segments. Put that through a basic converter and one of two things happens:

1. Shrink to fit: the reader squeezes the whole strip onto one 6-inch page. You get a thin sliver down the middle of the screen that's impossible to read.
2. Fixed-height cuts: a simple splitter cuts the strip every 1,000 pixels or so. The cuts land wherever they land, often through a speech bubble or a face.

Webtoon artists use the empty space between panels to set the pacing, so a good page break falls in that space.

What works today with MangaSendr

MangaSendr turns each image in your file into one page, sized for your Kindle model. That gives you two cases.

Chapters already cut into page-height images work well. Many webtoon archives store a chapter as a sequence of segments rather than one strip. Zip them (or use the CBZ you have), upload the file, and each segment becomes a full-screen page on your Kindle. Name the images with zero-padded numbers (001.jpg, 002.jpg) so they stay in order.

A single continuous strip does not. MangaSendr does not slice long strips into pages. A strip thousands of pixels tall becomes one page and shrinks to a sliver, exactly like the first failure above. Cut it into page-height segments first (see the next section).

A few other things to know:

• Page direction: MangaSendr builds books in right-to-left manga order by default. For a webtoon, choose Left to right (comics) under Reading direction on the upload screen so pages turn like a normal book. There's no top-to-bottom scrolling mode, so each segment is still its own page.
• Color: on a Kindle Colorsoft the pages keep their color. On a black-and-white Kindle they're converted to grayscale. Webtoons are full color, so some scenes lose contrast in gray. The Enhance Contrast setting, on by default, helps with washed-out pages.
• File size: long chapters with many segments can get large. MangaSendr splits big files into parts that fit Amazon's email limit, and each part gets its own cover.

Cutting a long strip into pages

If your chapter is one tall image, you need to slice it before any page-based reader can show it well. Your options:

• Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the free, open-source converter, has a webtoon mode that splits long strips into pages. It's the easiest route if you're comfortable with a desktop tool. You can read KCC's output on your Kindle directly, or upload the sliced images to MangaSendr as a ZIP.
• An image editor with a slice tool lets you place each cut by hand between panels. It gives the best breaks but takes a while for a long chapter.
• A release that's already segmented. If you buy DRM-free webtoons, check whether the publisher offers a page-based or segmented download.

Once the chapter is in page-height pieces, zip them in order and upload the ZIP.

Which e-reader suits webtoons

Larger screens help, because webtoon panels are drawn for a phone's width and lose detail when scaled down. A Kindle Scribe or another 10-inch reader shows more of each panel. For color, the Kindle Colorsoft and Kobo Libra Colour are the current options. MangaSendr only emails Kindles. For a Kobo, download the converted EPUB or CBZ and copy it over.
