A new direction for MangaSendr

MangaSendr is changing. We're stepping away from URL-based source fetching and focusing the product entirely on what it does best: converting and delivering files to your Kindle. Here's what that means, why we're doing it, and what to expect from us next.

What's changing

Effective immediately, MangaSendr will no longer add new manga sources from third-party websites, and we are pausing automatic syncing of existing sources for new chapters. The "Add Source" flow has been removed from the web app and the desktop app.

We are not deleting anything. Your library, your reading history, your Kindle devices, your subscription, your referral code, and your earned badges all stay where they are.

What stays the same

Everything you set up still works:

  • Every Kindle device you've configured.
  • Every conversion setting, including smart dithering, contrast enhancement, and the per-Kindle-model resolution targeting that ships your pages at the exact size your e-reader expects.
  • Your full delivery history.
  • Your active subscription, at its current price, with no changes.
  • Quests, referrals, badges, and your public profile.

What's coming

A clean drag-and-drop flow on the web, and watched folders on the desktop app. Drop a CBZ, EPUB, PDF, or folder of images, and get a Kindle-perfect copy in your inbox in under a minute. We'll let you know when it ships.

The thing we've always been quietly best at is the conversion itself. Properly sized pages for every Kindle generation. Dithering tuned for e-ink. Smart splitting so a tankōbon arrives as readable chapters instead of one giant file. We're putting the whole product behind that strength.

Why we're making this change

Building a service that fetches content from other websites on our users' behalf is not a foundation we can keep building on. It puts the service at the mercy of decisions made by sites we don't control, of payment-processor policy, and of legal frameworks that vary widely from country to country and keep tightening. Every quarter that we kept adding features on top of that foundation, the foundation got more fragile.

We'd rather make the hard call now, while we can do it cleanly, than be forced into it later by a circumstance we don't choose.

The new direction, converting and delivering files you provide, is a foundation we own. It depends only on us doing our part well. That's the business we want to be in.

What you should do

Nothing right now. The app still works for the libraries you've already built. When the new upload flow ships, we'll send you a short note explaining how to use it. If you have files you've been wanting to read on your Kindle, start gathering them. That's what the next version of MangaSendr is built around.

If you'd prefer to cancel because the change doesn't fit how you wanted to use the product, you can do that any time from your subscription settings, and we'll be sad to see you go.

Questions, comments, criticism

This change is not subtle, and we expect some of you will want to push back on it. We'd rather hear it.
