How to Organize Your Digital Manga with AniList Metadata

Is your digital manga library a chaotic mess of folders and generic covers? Learn how to automate metadata tagging and organizing using the AniList database.

A physical manga collection is a source of pride. The spines line up beautifully on a shelf, showcasing the artwork and author's name.

A digital manga collection, on the other hand, is usually a nightmare of file paths: /Manga/One_Piece/Ch_1000/[Translators_Name]_OP_v100_HQ.zip.

When you extract those files and send them to your Kindle or Kobo, the resulting library screen is an ugly grid of grey "DOC" icons, cryptic titles, and missing authors. Finding a specific volume to re-read requires deciphering an impossible naming convention.

Here is how to take your unorganized hard drive and transform it into a beautifully curated digital library, fully automated.

1. The Importance of Clean Metadata

E-readers do not care about the name of the file (e.g., naruto_01.epub). They read the metadata—the internal XML code embedded inside the file.

To have a functioning digital library on a Kindle or Kobo, your files must contain:

  1. Title: e.g., "Naruto, Vol. 1"
  2. Series Name & Index: Essential for grouping books into "Collections".
  3. Author/Artist: Essential for filtering and searching.
  4. Synopsis: The back-of-the-book description.
  5. Cover Art: A high-resolution .jpg injected properly into the structure.

2. The Hard Way: Manual Calibre Tagging

For casual readers, Calibre is the go-to tool.

If you download a raw .cbz archive, it contains zero metadata. It is just a zip file of pictures. To fix this using Calibre:

  1. Import the .cbz.
  2. Right-click and choose Edit Metadata.
  3. Manually type in the Author and Series name.
  4. Go to Google Images, find a clean, text-free volume cover, download it, and upload it into Calibre.
  5. Use a plugin to copy that cover into the zip file.
  6. Convert it to an EPUB so the metadata is locked in.

This process takes about 2 to 3 minutes per volume. If you have a library of 1,000 volumes, you are looking at dozens of hours of repetitive data entry.

3. The Automated Way: The MangaSendr + AniList Integration

We hate data entry. The internet already has massive, crowdsourced databases containing perfect metadata for every manga ever created.

The largest and most accurate is AniList.

MangaSendr is natively integrated with the AniList API. This integration acts as an automated librarian for your digital collection.

When you configure MangaSendr's "Watched Folders" and drop a poorly named file (like [Group]_Chainsaw_Man_01_HQ.cbz) into the folder, the engine activates:

  1. Smart Recognition: Our regex engine strips out the translator group tags, quality tags (HQ/HD), and numbers to isolate the core series title: "Chainsaw Man".
  2. API Fetch: It queries the AniList database instantly.
  3. Data Extraction: It pulls down the official English title, the Romaji title, the Author (Tatsuki Fujimoto), the Genres (Action, Supernatural), and the official synopsis.
  4. Cover Download: It downloads the ultra-high-resolution cover artwork directly from the AniList servers.
  5. Metadata Injection: MangaSendr packages all of this information into an optimized EPUB 3 container.

The resulting file that arrives on your Kindle is perfect. Your device will categorize it correctly, index the author name for search, and display the stunning cover art on your lock screen.

It Tracks Your Progress Too

The integration isn't just a 1-way fetch. Because MangaSendr knows exactly what file you are sending to your Kindle, it can talk back to AniList.

In your MangaSendr settings, you can enable Read Tracking. When you click "Send" to push Chapter 150 to your device, MangaSendr automatically pings your AniList profile and updates your reading status to Read: 150.

You never have to manually log your progress on a tracking site again.
