Why Your Kindle Keeps Deleting Manga Covers (And How to Fix It)

Sideloaded a book but the cover disappeared? Learn about the Amazon ASIN bug and how to permanently lock high-res artwork to your library shelves.

It is the most infuriating bug in the e-reader community.

You spend 20 minutes creating the perfect EPUB. You carefully attach a high-resolution, full-color cover in Calibre. You send it to your Kindle via USB. You open your library, and the cover is there! It looks beautiful.

Then you connect to WiFi. Within 10 seconds, the screen flashes. Your beautiful cover disappears, permanently replaced by a generic, ugly, grey "DOC" icon.

Your curated library suddenly looks like an Excel spreadsheet. Here is why Amazon does this, and the two ways to fix it.

The "ASIN Bug" Explained

When your Kindle connects to the internet, a background service constantly tries to sync your local library with the Amazon Store.

It does this by looking for an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) inside the metadata of your book file. If you sideloaded a manga you downloaded online, the file either:

  1. Has no ASIN: The Kindle doesn't know what the book is, so it defaults to the generic icon.
  2. Has a fake/borrowed ASIN: Some converters try to trick the system by injecting a random string of numbers. But when the Kindle queries the Amazon server and the server says, "I don't recognize that ID," the Kindle "corrects" your local file by wiping out the metadata it thinks is corrupted—including the cover image.

Option 1: The Airplane Mode Curse

The most common advice on Reddit is simply: "Never turn on WiFi."

If your Kindle stays in Airplane Mode forever, it can never talk to the Amazon servers, and therefore it can never overwrite your covers.

Why it sucks: You turned a $150 wireless smart device into a 1995 brick. You can no longer buy books from the store, sync Wikipedia definitions, automatically sync your reading position to your phone, or use the "Send-to-Kindle" feature. You are tied to a USB cable permanently.

Option 2: The Permanent Fix (Metadata Injection)

To fix this properly, you have to restructure the internal XML code of your ebook file before you send it to your device. You have to format the file in a specific way that tells the Kindle OS: "This is a Personal Document. Do not try to sync it with the Kindle Store."

Furthermore, a separate .jpg thumbnail must be surgically injected into the hidden system/thumbnails directory on the device hardware.

Doing this manually via USB is tedious. MangaSendr does it automatically.

How MangaSendr Locks Your Covers

We treat your library aesthetic as a priority. If you use MangaSendr to send a .cbz file to your Kindle, you will never see a missing cover again.

  1. AniList Fetching: Our engine reads your file name ("Spy x Family v01") and queries AniList to download the official, ultra-high-resolution artwork.
  2. ASIN Bypassing: When converting the archive to an EPUB, we inject specific Personal Document flags into the OPF header.
  3. USB Thumbnail Injection: If you are using our USB mode for massive collections, our app talks directly to the Kindle's file system, bypassing the Amazon sync completely, and securely dropping the thumbnail exactly where the OS expects to find it.

The result is a flawlessly curated library. Your covers stay visible online or offline, forever.
